Unbeknownst to the college football world, Stanford's HC David Shaw had a huge trick in store for USC yesterday and it certainly flummoxed the Trojan defense in the early going.
Here's how Shaw surprised USC: (1) Without warning, Stanford switched from their long-time power football offense to a completely new "slow-mesh" pass-run option attack. (2) The change was installed in secret and was not used by the Cardinal in their season opener, a 41-10 victory over Colgate. (3) While the Trojans won the game 41-28, Stanford's new offensive scheme worked very well, especially in the first half.
Bottom Line: The new offense fits the exceptional talents of Stanford QB Tanner McKee, and it showed.
