USC 66, Rice 14: So, What?
“It was like a breath of fresh air, a reminder of what life used to be like around here, a literal blast from the past. The drudgery of Clay Helton, the darkness of Steve Sarkisian, the craziness of Lane Kiffin, all of it disappeared in a three-hour throwback to Pete Carroll.” - Bill Plaschke, Los Angeles Times 9/4/22.
Yes! That’s how it was! I felt it too! Even on a very hot afternoon that had fans looking for any shade they could find and drinking gallons of water while watching the rout of an overmatched foe.
Q: So, what was so different? A: Everyone on the USC side of the field seemed to know what they were doing and did it very well. That has clearly not been the case since Carroll left town.
Bottom Lines: (1) The USC offense is exceptionally talented everywhere and will score more points faster than most Trojan teams of the past. As a result, many opponents will try to play ball control to keep the USC offense in check. It will be a difficult task. (2) The USC defense is less talented, but the new staff shows a heighted ability in making meaningful pre, post, and in-game adjustments than those of the past several years. Regardless, several games will likely be scoring shootouts this year. (3) The USC game management showed vast improvement in all areas throughout the contest including no wasted timeouts, no silly penalties, and a keen awareness of actions needing attention and how to make them.
