Channel Islands National Park Suprise
I just spent about a week up in the Oxnard-Ventura, CA area having a lot of fun, and part of that included trips in and around several of those pristine islands---A great place to visit if you like boating and such.
Anyway, coming back to port one day I experienced something I had not before: A huge group of dolphins (hundreds of them) formed and began corralling their dinner by creating a huge circle (100 yards plus in diameter) which they quickly compressed to better capture their prey. Somehow, we ended up in the middle of the furious process with dolphins bursting up and around everywhere, with the water churning and birds diving down from all four quarters! While I was aware such things happen, it was the first I'd seen up close and in person. Really thrilling!

For those who may be interested in Channel Islands National Park, here's a link to the Park Service official video they show in Ventura Harbor (a good stop to visit and where you can get transport to the islands):
Note: When the NPS screen opens, scroll down to the start button below and then click for a full screen view. It runs for about 24 minutes and IMO is one of the best NPS videos around.
P.S. If you do go there, don't miss trying the Crab Dip Appetizer at the nearby Boatyard Pub (get the large!). It's so good I kept going there every chance I got and finally asked the chef if he'd sell me the recipe. He said, "Thanks but No Thanks! That's why I have it at the top of our menu!"
